with its white trees (weird!)..
.. is melting, whoopdedoo.
No, I’m not in favour of global warming. Winter is just not for me. I want spring. Although, admittedly, the cold period resulted in pretty sights.

Such a Dutch picture! Well, go figure, I live here. Well, not here, but in this country anyway.
After a day which included various forms of battling with the elements (waiting for the bus in the freezing cold, cycling over roads layered with ten centimeters of ice), I found I and my possessions lacked, and thus deserved, some sense of flower power.

And indeed, some butterfly and colour power. That should get me through this historically cold night.
the tunnel of the thesis
January 5, 2009
After one day back at work after the holidays, I feel it’s time to restore the PhD comic that helped me through my Master’s thesis writing to its former glory. Which is as my desktop background, but that is of not much use as a blog item, so here it is:

Or, to put it differently, thesis writing and doing research feels like this:

Which is what research really is about, I suppose. Still, it is a tunnel.
and yet

It’s freezing, it’s snowing, it’s barely January.
And yet. Oh, and yet. I feel spring is marching in.

Hello there, sweet sun. Fancy meeting you again!
(Just a very very quick (not to spoil the spring mood) look at the winter landscape around here)

idea of the year
January 2, 2009
So, here goes. To help my poor disrooted self getting a grip on life as it is after stepping out of my comfort zone, this year will be guided by themes. Taking it year by year, season by season and month by month, each period will have its own particular topic, which I can ponder about, read about, work on and work with. And which will help me stay sane. Or just leads to helpful thoughts. Or at least keeps me occupied. We’ll see how it goes.
And as you might have figured out by now, I’ll use this blog to keep track of the process.
Here’s to a themy and sane year.
